Fortnite Ranked

Role

Principal UX Designer

We brought Fortnite players a fun and rewarding Ranked experience, that allows the hardcore players to grind into the Unreal Rank, whilst the more casual-minded players can play and unlock rewards. Our main goals were to make Ranked easy to discover, give the player a feel-good moment seeing their Rank increase, and be inclusive to all fun items within Fortnite. The UX work for Ranked spans all aspects of the game from the FTUE to a Ranked Lobby, in-game quests, and a modular redesigned Post-Match match experience.

Overview

Fortnite Zero Build

Role

FN Gameplay UIUX Lead

We wanted to turn traditional FN on its head and during Chapter 3 Season 2 so we removed building from Fortnite, a core gameplay mechanic. To do this we had to support new gameplay mechanics such as the Overshield, Sprint, and Mantling. The UIUX team refined the HUD to support a build-less mode, adding new Health Status indicators and making it easy for players to understand their new additional regenerative shield.

To help onboarding we created a Bootcamp during this War-themed season. It instructed, and give players a set of quests to quickly learn the new movement mechanics.

Fortnite Augments

Role

Principal UX Designer

We delivered and refined a complex Augment Perk system to the Fortnite HUD to allow players to change up their gameplay, and select new perks throughout the mode. We supported the UI HUD selection, a collection screen homing all unlocked augments, and a notification that communicates when a player can select a new perk.

EXPERIENCE

Epic Games

2020 – Current

My role as a Principal UX Designer on Fortnite is to ultimately ensure players from all walks of life have a usable and fun gaming experience. Currently, I am working in the Gameplay space and since I started at Epic Games, it’s been an honour to lead a redesign of the game selection flow, allowing players to discover the vast amount of content on Fortnite. Completely overhauled the Inventory system and introduce a new inventory management feature called Preferred Item Slots.

Whilst I have been at Epic, it’s been a pleasure leading UX on 4 seasons including both Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 launches, whilst contributing to 10+ seasons of the crazy world of Fortnite. This includes work on all the fun gameplay features, onboarding, and over UX direction of seasonal gameplay.

Twitter

2015 – 2020

As a Senior Product Designer at Twitter, I led the design for the Discovery of Explore and Trends on the Platform. My goal was to make sure people in the world were informed on what’s happening in the simplest, direct, and easy-to-access way possible. My work spanned across the Home Timeline, Search, and Explore areas to accomplish this.

Prior to leading the Explore design, I led a product innovation initiative with the largest Publishers on the platform. We created key pieces of innovation for the NFL, NBA, MTV, Netflix, The Games Awards, and many more to connect the publishers with the audience. We built a lasting and flexible voting mechanic within the Twitter DM space for the MTV Awards, which went on to be used by many other Publishers. We also designed and built the first standalone Twitter App for Verified Celebrities. This allowed high-profile Twitter users, to connect with their audiences in new ways.

Freelance Animation & Illustration

2007–2015

Prior to Twitter, I enjoy freelancing in the world of motion graphics and animation. I had the utmost pleasure of animating the rebrand of Toyota for their digital presence, creating tour visuals for Ed Sheeran and Ozzy Osbourne, and working for clients such as Google, Playstation, Discovery Channel, Disney Channel, TSB Banking, and more.
